George Prince

It is with sadness that we learned today of the death of George Prince, a long-standing member. He
sailed with Ron Jones on Wild Thyme, Halcyon of Burnham and High Spirits, before joining Harry
Croker’s crew on Cheetah of Burnham the SJ 30. When Harry died, he joined us aboard Mantra and
finished his racing days, still on the foredeck, and we benefitted greatly from his knowledge,
expertise and ability to make things.
He was eminently practical and a great craftsman. He made wooden toys that several young
members still have today. He also made the Harry Croker trophy for the river. Several boats have
been at the receiving end of gadgets he has made to ensure things work, or work better.
Afloat he was cool, calm and collected, even when he lost another pipe overboard when the
spinnaker went up! Ashore he was kind, helpful and a real gentleman. Whilst we haven’t seen him
recently in the Club, he will be greatly missed by us all.
Our thoughts and prayers are with his children and grandchildren.
