John Torrance R.I.P.

It is with great sadness that yesterday we learnt that our Vice President, John Torrance, passed away. It was unexpected and our hearts and thoughts go out to his wife Julie and sons Jason and Alex.

John was a Life Member of the Burnham on Crouch Sailing Club, served as Commodore and in 2009, as a mark of respect for his services and dedication to the Club, elected Vice President.

John has sailed at and represented the BSC since he was a “chatty young lad of 8 or 9″ crewing a 16 footer. Later on he was very instrumental in establishing the BSC’s junior section.  He was highly respected as a sailor in both dinghies and keelboats, as a race officer, and for his contribution to the Joint Clubs Committee and Burnham Week. He will be sorely missed by all his friends at the BSC and the River Crouch sailing community.

  2. Really sad news. He will be sorely missed. John was such an important part of the club. He was always there to help when I first sailed cadets at the club aged 10 and was there to race against in the dinghy fleet at burnham week nearly every year. Such a gentleman and incredibly talented sailor. Jo tribe, Ellen and Caitlin.

  3. Good Morning: I came across this obituary today (December 5 2018), and I wonder if you could shed a little more light on the late John Torrance as I suspect he may have been my second cousin. Parents of the John Torrance I knew were Ian and Edna Torrance who lived in Burnham on Crouch and John would have been born circa 1947. Ian Torrance, John’s father, was Scottish, born in Glasgow and he was my mother’s cousin. Apologies for the intrusion but I would be grateful if the Club could answer my inquiry. Regards Alasdair Gibbons
